Artist Biographies:
David and May Johnsen were married on November 6th, 1949. Together they would create a family of artists which quickly expanded with the arrival of their son David on November 9th, 1950. For many years, the pair of Brainard artists would create numerous works of art while running a local store and raising their son.

 

 
 
David Johnsen
(1919-1994)
  • Strived to capture the surreal essence of the world through his depictions of romantic sea scapes and emotional portraits.
  • Student at N.Y Phonex School of Design 1946-47
  • John Carrol apprenticeship, 1947-50.
  • Exhibited group shows: Albany, New York, Pittsfield, Massachusets, Hudson, New York, National Academy of Design, New York
  • Served from Pvt. to Sgt with the United States Air Force, 1942-45.
  • Member of the Albany Artist Group Inc, Coumbia Arts and Crafts Guild, and Berskhire Art Association.


  • Invested much ability in refining the art of miniatures and practicing the ancient art of Silverpoint as pioneered by Michaelenglo.
  • Exhibited national and internationally including: Hamilton Miniature Nat. Exhibit, Ohio (miniature marine award), World Miniature Art Exhbn, Tasmania, Australia, Silvermine Guild Artists Internat. show Breverd Mus. Florda, Internat. Soc. Marine Painters show Heritage Plantation, Mus., Sandwich, Mass., Miniature Society Painters and Sculpturs show, Ga.
  • Recipient Spl. Mariner award, Nassau, N.Y., two first prizes Colombia County Fair, Chatham, N.Y., Recipient 1st and 2nd place watercolor awards, 2nd place Graphic Silver Point award, Calvatone, Italty.
  • Member of the Amateur Society of Miniature Painters of New Jersey, Society of Marine Painters, Sculptors and Gravers of Washington, D.C., Ohio Miniature Society, Society of International Marine Painters.
